MORE ANECDOTES IN THE LIFE OF MON CHERI (part III)
Mon Cheri and her shadow
Mon Cheri’s only fault is that she barks at everything in her territory. While we have been training with some success not to bark at other dogs or people that walk by, she still vocalizes when we are outside. During evening hours, there is a long shadow cast by the setting sun. MC sees it and tries to chase it and of course, barks fiercely at it. At times she seems scared of the long figures and refuses to continue walking.
Mon Cheri has laryngitis Recently a new dog moved into the neighborhood. He is a big Old English Sheepdog named Sterling with a bark to match. He of course was a challenge to MC. One morning they met on the same sidewalk and the concert began. Both woofed at each other for several minutes. MC was beside herself and barked and barked and barked… By the time she got home, she was vomiting saliva and when she calmed down, she had no voice left. This quiet lasted for about a day. The next day we were walking by Sterling’s house and MC saw him sitting on the sofa. Of course, she had to say hello to him. When he heard her, he charged to the deck right through the screen knocking it down. Another barking concert in stereo followed. Now when they meet, I immediately warn her not to even think of barking. It works most of the time.
Mon Cheri is invited to a birthday party Mon Cheri has made friends with two King Charles Cavalier Spaniels who live around the corner. They are about the same size as she is. They usually meet on the sidewalk and are crazy to see each other. It is quite a lively trio. MC surprisingly does not bark and just likes to play with them. Their names are Katie and Mollie. When they turned 1 year old recently, MC received a written invitation to the birthday party. There were about 12 dogs of different breeds, all from the neighborhood. Of course, her friend Lady came with us. There were party hats, games and treats for the canines and cake and icecream for the adults. The moment we arrived, MC did nothing but bark. Of course this set the other dogs in motion. The only time she was quiet was when she ate a treat. We had to leave a little early and I told her that was probably the last time she was invited to a party. Needless to say, I was embarrassed.
Mon Cheri has a boyfriend
MC has been corresponding by with Sir Oliver, a 1 ˝ year
old Coton who lives in Maryland. He is so handsome and has the most
gorgeous coat. His mom read the first anecdotes that were published
in L’Echo des Elingues Magazine #3 and wrote me. Pretty soon Sir Oliver
and MC were sending each other emails almost everyday with pictures
and cards. I include a few samples of their correspondence: Sir Oliver
writes to Mon Cheri : Mon Cheri answers: Oliver writes to Mon Cheri: Mom went out today & left me with this DUMB talking ball. It had Mom's voice, but I wasn't born yesterday & I know Mom wouldn't fit in that ball:(:(..........UH!! AND NOW, it isn't so bad I lay down for my treat, Mom says 'TAIL' and I am supposed to wave my tail happily....UH! Of course being a smart COTON, I did it, so now every time I get a treat....I lay down and wave my TAIL HAPPILY......no less! Is that dumb or what?? Sometimes, I don't think these humans have enough to do! They certainly can think up goofy things for US to do....huh? Mom just thinks it is adorable." Mon Chéri writes to Oliver: Oliver writes to Mon Cheri:
Mon Cheri chases butterflies There is an abundance of butterflies this summer. They are of various sizes and colors and fly just at the level of Mon Cheri’s eyes. She follows them with her eyes and then in a ballerina type fashion jumps up and tries to catch them. She runs after them across the green grass and colorful flowers. It is adorable to watch her in this new pastime. At other times, she sits and watches insects crawl and fly near her. With her paw she tries to hit them. Most of the time though, she is not fast enough. |
