Heidi Petran and her husband, sent us some other anecdotes regarding Mon Chéri, their little Coton de Tulear female. They live in USA. Everybody remember the first part of the histories of this little white fluffy ball published in #3. So go on for :

Some anecdotes in the life of MON CHERI (part II)

Mon Cheri announces her arrival at our house on October 27, 1998r

Hello! My name is Mon Cheri. I was born August 16, 1998 in Michigan. My breeder is Dee Gidday, but she told me to call her Grandma. My daddy’s name is Munchkin and my mommy’s name is Nicki. Now I am 2 months old and weigh about 3 pounds. I am still very little, but I love to eat.

My Mama Heidi feeds me good stuff (chicken and rice) twice a day and she always has fresh water for me. I have my own water bottle marked MON CHERI in the refrigerator. I guess I will grow fast, because I also get yummy vitamins. You probably want to know what I look like. I am white all over with big beige spots. My eyes are big and black and are surrounded by black hair that extends to my cute nose. I am really adorable: that is why Mama Heidi and Papa Vlado chose me and brought me to their home. They drove over six hours each way to get me. It was a long trip for them, but I slept most of the time on the back seat. It was so comfy! They are so good to me and love me soooooooooo much. They love to spoil me and of course, I love to be spoiled. I want to make them very happy. I hope they smile a lot with me around. I love my adoptive family.

Very soon I have to go to the vet. Whatever that is! Hope he is nice. Maybe he has a cookie for me?

I go outside a lot, because I don’t want to have any accidents in the house. Also I love to sniff and meet my friends in the neighborhood. There is LADY, a cousin of mine (Coton de Tulear), and PARIS and FLEUR (two bichons) and a Doberman Pincher. He is huge. I stay away from him! When all four of us are outside walking, all the cars stop to look at four white dogs. It is so much fun to play with them. All the dogs in the neighborhood come to Papa Vlado’s house, because he always has cookies for them. They automatically turn to his door when they walk by. Now I can bark at them, because I would like all of Papa Vlado’s attention for myself.

Mon Cheri’s first birthday party

Mon Cheri and Lady (left to right) eating hamburgers

August 16 is Mon Cheri’s birthday. All through the first year I thought about what to do to celebrate the arrival of this sweetheart into our lives. What better than to celebrate this special day with her friends. There is Lady, of course; then Paris and Fleur (2 bichons) who live down the street. At one time it seemed that Paris was MC’s first boyfriend. But that’s another story. The planned activities were as follows:

First we would all go to theTennis court and play tennis; that is, all 4 dogs would chase tennis balls on the court or each other. Since it was fenced in, there was no danger of any dog running away. Then all the doggies and their mothers climbed into the car and we drove to the drive-through at Burger King. It was a riot to see the other people stare at all those white dogs and their crazy mothers ordering plain hamburgers on plain buns. (No sesame seeds; we know what they can do to their digestive systems.) Of course, the adults ate their own special meals, but all the doggies were gobbling down hamburgers and a couple of French fries. This was the first time that MC had eaten people food and she devoured her hamburger.

M MMMMMMMMM!!! Then we all went home where there were party hats, balloons, noisemakers and presents. More playtime followed. The guests all went home content a couple of hours later. MC was exhausted. She was in her cage by 8:30. When she is tired, she enters voluntarily and curls up in the corner. She sleeps next to my bed and never comes out until I wake up in the morning. I thought this would be a peaceful night. Around midnight there was a big commotion in the cage. MC had to go potty. I dressed quickly and took her outside where she did her business. Then she felt better and went back to sleep. She is so good: she never has an accident inside the house anymore. She is almost like the adults when they have too much good stuff to eat and drink, they get sick.

Mon Cheri, the party girl

To show how good she is, this example will suffice: MC had caught a parasite (Giardia) last December and was vomiting and having diarrhea for 14 hours. She asked me every ten minutes to go outside. Not once did she have an accident in the house even though she was quite sick.

MonCheri and her Tante Doris

"Tante" means aunt and it refers to MC’s favorite neighbor who lives across the street. Since she works all day, she usually sees her Saturdays. It has become a tradition that in the morning we visit so that MC can get a cookie or a carrot. We have to cross the street and she sits automatically and looks to the right and to the left to see if any cars are coming. Then when she gets my OK, she runs to the front door and does her many circles. (Her usual sign of excitement). She enters the kitchen and runs to the cupboard where the cookies are. She does so many circles that you cannot tell her tail from her head. This is accompanied by loud barking. She is so happy to get her cookie and to sit in Tante Doris’ lap. During the week when we walk by, she always eyes the house and checks with me if it is Saturday already.

Mon Cheri goes to the groomer

Of course, MC has to go to the beauty salon about once a month. Her groomer Jan is a sweet and patient lady who loves MC. However, as soon as we enter the parking lot, MC starts crying (it is a series of heart-wrenching sobs). Outside the car, she wants to run in the opposite direction across the street to K-Mart (a department store). She does a thousand circles to show her nervousness. Not even a cookie can appease her then. After a while she does settle down and is a good girl. After a couple of hours, she is happily reunited with her Mommy. Of course, she looks beautiful—our special little princess.

Mon Cheri goes to the bank

MC always trembles when she rides with me in the car. To get her to overcome her fear, I take her with me whenever I can. One place she enjoys visiting is the bank. We use the drive-through lane to cash a check or make a deposit. The bank always gives a treat to their "Dog customers". MC knows that and she jumps on my lap and waits when the cookie appears in the window with the bank receipt.

Mon Cheri goes to her family reunion

Grandma Dee, Mon Cheri and Munchkin (June 2000)

Last June MC and I drove to Michigan so she could visit with her Grandma and play with her biological mom and dad. The trip by car took about 6 hours. During the whole time, MC sat in the back seat and was trembling like a leaf. At the rest stops, she would not do any of her business; instead, she ran back to the car. She was afraid she would be left behind. Once we arrived at out destination, she continued to be afraid and hid behind me. Not even the other cotons or her Grandma Dee Gidday could entice her to come out of her shell. She was shy and timid—the opposite to her usual lively character. Her daddy Munchkin sniffed her and went to play with the other cotons; and her mommy Nicki did likewise. I probably expected a recognition scene, which did not happen. The only resemblance I noticed was that MC runs in circles like Nicki. In the big play area she had made a trail in the stones by constantly running in circles. MC inherited that trait. We stayed only one day. If we would have had more time, I am sure that MC would have enjoyed the visit fully. On the way back, she stopped trembling and went to sleep on the back seat of the car.

Mon Cheri chases after cars

MC developed a naughty habit. When we are outside walking, she tries to run after red and blue cars and barks like crazy. I have to hold her leash very tight since she is so strong. I try to cure her of that bad habit. I stop and scold her: NO, NO, BAD GIRL. This has been going on the last few months. Hopefully with consistent scolding, she will finally listen. Four times now she has gotten loose and ran after cars. She must have a guardian angel since she has been fortunate so far. Normally MC is such a good girl that I never have to admonish her. Any ideas fellow coton owners?

Bye, bye for now! Mon Cheri
