World Dog Show 2001 in Porto (Portugal)
Report by Elisabetta de Luca (Italy)
Pictures H.G. & H. Bonneveld

Even if this was my sixth World dog show I was taking part to, and even if I only have showed my new young dogs, I can't hide it has been like always a truly emotional experience. Breeders from all around the world come to this extraordinary event to meet friends and "enemies" from other countries and to compare the work they have done for so many months at home finally showed in the ring. It's a way to value your work and other breeder works, to see new dogs and new possibly studs or new lines you could be interested to. I think it's a very important appointment for all serious breeders who want to exchange information, opinions, and cooperation.
But now come to the real main protagonist of the day, the dogs. The enrolled cotons were this year only 40 but also if the entries has been exactly the half of last years I think the average quality of the cotons was really good. The exhibitors had come from: Finland, Belgium, France, Croatia, Usa, Holland, Spain, Italy, Hungary…. The judge was Ms De Ridder from Belgium the some judge has been judging the World dog show in 1998 in Finland, the biggest entries we had ever at a World dog show (around 120 cotons).
The Best of Breed and World champion was Ysaura of the Swift Cotton, bred and owned by Helene Tibbe from Belgium. Yasura is the daughter of the BOB of 1998 in Finland Manon du domaine de la Rouviere. Great mama, great daughter.
Best of Opposite and World Champion the youngest male in Open class, the not yet 17 months Reggae de l'Echo des Elingues a gorgeous dog bred and owned by Cathy Armani in France. His full sister, Raffia de l'echo des Elingues conquered the r.cacib so a big applause to Cathy for those incredible brother and sister!

The Junior World champion male was Rifelin Amadeus, from Finland, bred by Sejia Virta, who produced also the World champions 1996 and 1999 Rifelin Julius Caesar (this year r.cacib) and 1997 and 2000 Rifelin Lion King, retired from shows, owned by me and very happy to pass on the crown to an outstanding dog like Reggae for 2001. .
The Junior World champion female is my 10 months Cotonbrie Ritz Rich and Chic, we come from Italy.
So four Champions coming from 4 different countries, the coton quality is increasing all around the world. Congratulations to everyone! The chapter of Portugal it's now closed. The next appointment is for July 2002 in central Holland where I'm sure the cotons will be enrolled in a big number of entries coming from every corner of the world.
Here the detailed results in every class:
