There are 21 letters in the Malagasy alphabet, letters C, Q, U, W et X don't exist.

In the French words adapted in Malagasy these letters has been replaced :

  • C became S ou K
  • Q bacame K
  • X became KS

There are 5 simple vowels : a, e, i, o (they can be pronouced in accordance with their place in the word like in French, or in English) and y (pronounced e)
