United States of America

In the US. it is possible to register the Coton with many different registries. Most organizations only send the Registration Certificate, and if you want a printed Pedigree Certificate, they charge an additional fee to print it. But in order to issue the Registration Certificate, they must first verify the 3 generation pedigree, or be provided a copy from another registry that they accept.
The Coton is ever accepted into AKC (American Kennel Club)
for conformation. Effective March 1, 2000, all rare breed dogs, including the Coton, are now allowed to compete in agility and obedience with AKC, as long as they are registered with FSS (Foundation Stock Service) which is the Rare Breed Division of the American Kennel Club. That is why you can obtain the FSS registration, as well. In addition, if , you will need the FSS registration, so it is valuable to have now.
AKC FSS will accept USACTC and CTCA and UKC and SKC papers . One of the reasons many Coton owners register their dogs with multiple registries is so that when dogs from different owners are bred, the sire and dam will have a common registry to be able to register the puppy litter. Some owners register the litter with multiple registries, as well, to be able to provide the new puppy buyer the choice of registry, depending on whether they intend to show in conformation or agility.
It is very confusing here in the states with all these registries, and it seems like it would be simpler to have one registry body, but the main problem is that there are a number of different breed clubs (USACTC, CTCA, ACTA, UKC, ACC, etc.) and they all have their own registries.
Note also that some of the US registries differentiate between breeding stock and non-breeding stock.

If on the certificate registration it states "FULL" or "NON-LIMITED", which means that the dog is a breedable animal, and as such, his progeny are eligible to be registered under a litter application. If the Certificate says "LIMITED", the animal is NOT considered breed quality, and any puppies may NOT be registered.
The USACTC uses the distinction of FULL vs. LIMITED registration.
If the Coton is not breedable, FSS issues a special LIMITED REGISTRATION Certificate, meaning the progeny may not be registered. It is the original breeder and/or the Sales Contract that determines whether the animal is breed quality.
