What's UCARE? That's the question that many Coton lovers in America are asking these days, especially with the publication of the first ever UCARE calendar for 2002.

Ashley is a rescude Coton

UCARE is the collaboration of a number of concerned Coton owners spearheaded by Jane Arrington whose devotion to animal rescue is well-known among various rescue groups in the U.S., regardless of the breed, and who became involved with the Coton world seven years ago. Although the number of Cotons who need to be rescued or re-homed remains small, with the growing popularity of the breed, Jane and a few others agreed that a more formal network should be established. We wanted to make sure that we could respond to any Coton that might be in need - regardless of Club affiliation or background. Thus, UCARE was born early last year. Its name speaks for itself - the United Coton de Tulear Association for Rescue and Education. And UCARE is not as concerned with "how" the dog is registered or the circumstances surrounding the dog's rescue as much as it is concerned with THE COTON and trying to find these marvelous creatures a loving home. We're delighted that UCARE's efforts have been endorsed by USACTC and the ACC, and would welcome Coton lovers everywhere to join in our united cause.

It's not all about rescue but also trying to educate breeders and potential buyers of the needs Not only do UCARE volunteers make contact and network with other rescue groups, they've also distributed flyers to local animal shelters describing this rare breed, including a variety of pictures, and telling the shelter employees and volunteers that UCARE is there to help identify the breed and arrange for fostering and rescue. UCARE has also established a nationwide network of volunteers who stand ready to help it whatever way they can.

Mimi and Ashley (rescued cotons)

Next year we hope to contact the known breeders and get them to join in our "cause". And, with the donation of funds received from the publication of the UCARE calendar for 2002, we believe we'll be prepared to do even more in the coming year! Recently we learned that Coton de Tulear from Europe were included in the Missouri puppy mill auctions. Our networking has already reached across the ocean to our European friends to see what we can do to prevent this in the future. We fear that first auction may just be the tip of the iceberg, as we've seen it happen with other rare breeds, and the need for UCARE volunteers will be even more important in the future. Want to participate or learn more, contact Jane Arrington at clover1@flash.net or visit our UCARE website.
